If your QuickBooks bill went up recently, you are not imagining it. For renewals starting August 1, 2026, Intuit raised prices on QuickBooks Online Essentials, Plus and Advanced; Plus went from $115 to $140 a month. The headline feature is now QuickBooks AI, which Intuit calls Intuit Intelligence. Here is what it does, plan by plan, and whether it earns the new price.
What QuickBooks AI Actually Is
Part of it is a chat box: ask "What invoices are due this week?" and get an answer from your own books. Part of it is agents: software that does a task by itself, like sorting transactions, then hands you the result to check in the business feed, which Intuit calls the place "where you'll review and approve work done for you." Simple Start gets the chat and simpler automations but no agents, Intuit says.
QuickBooks AI by Plan, in Plain English
| Plan | What the AI does |
|---|---|
| Simple Start $38/month, 1 user |
Sorts expenses. Suggests tax deductions. AI chat, including what-if questions (beta). Simple automations you describe in chat (beta). |
| Essentials $85/month, 3 users |
Tidies your books, asking about unclear transactions. Drafts invoices from sales orders and chases unpaid ones on rules you set (beta). Estimates quarterly taxes. Yearly books check-in with a human expert. |
| Plus $140/month, 5 users |
Sorts transactions, with experts reviewing monthly. Reconciles your books to your bank statements. Flags odd transactions. Catches sales tax mismatches. Saves what-if plans from chat as budgets (beta). |
| Advanced $340/month, 25 users |
Creates projects from contracts and splits costs across them. Ongoing books quality checks by Intuit experts. Quarterly books check-ins. |

Beta Features and Checking the AI's Work
Beta means "still being tested." Intuit's fine print says the chat is for admin users only, with a limited number of questions, and "Beta features have very limited availability and are subject to change." Do not depend on it.
The bigger issue is review. A miscategorized expense flows into your profit and loss report, then into your tax return and your pricing. If the AI files a landscaper's $400 mulch order under "office supplies," that job looks cheaper than it was, and the next quote may be too low. You approve the work, which only helps if you look. My rule: open the business feed weekly, look closest at anything over a dollar amount you choose, and have your accountant review the year before you file.
The ChatGPT and Claude Connection
QuickBooks connects to Claude (Intuit calls it a connector) and ChatGPT (a plugin), add-ons that let a chatbot work in QuickBooks with your permission. Since July 2026, the chatbot can create, edit and send invoices, and send overdue reminders. On payroll, it only answers questions. Intuit says every action stays reviewable and your data never trains the AI models behind these chatbots. For the wider privacy picture, see what happens to your data in ChatGPT.
Is the Higher Tier Worth the Renewal Price?
At list price, the increase adds $120 a year on Essentials, $300 on Plus and $780 on Advanced, and Plus costs $1,224 a year more than Simple Start. Your bill can differ by subscription and renewal date, so check Settings, then Subscriptions and billing.
Plan limits come first. AI features you can often get elsewhere.
QuickBooks already turns emailed vendor invoices into draft bills on every paid plan. The "one small automation" covers the gaps, like turning finished jobs in your scheduling tool into draft invoices, or posting a Monday list of who owes you money to your team chat: the kind of job we build in workflow automation projects. Weigh its cost, plus any paid chatbot plan, against the $1,224.
Intuit's help page says moving to Simple Start or Essentials means deleting classes or locations, turning off inventory tracking, and removing users over the plan's limit. Simple Start also requires turning off recurring transactions, and is off-limits once multi-currency is on. Before turning off inventory, save the Product/Service List report as a record of your items and stock. Then ask your accountant. This post is general information, not tax or accounting advice.
The Bottom Line
QuickBooks AI earns its price when it takes a weekly chore off your plate and you still check its work. Chat alone does not justify a higher tier. Before renewal, list the AI features you used last quarter, and keep the cheapest plan that includes them. If a chore needs your judgment, read when I tell clients to skip AI first.
