The first decade of consumer AI was reactive. You typed, it answered. Inside the last eight months that has quietly flipped. Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google have all launched proactive AI features that act without being asked. The headline name on each one is different, but the product shape is the same: a daily briefing pulled from your Gmail, Slack, calendar, and the rest of your stack, plus suggestions about what to do next.
This is a real shift, not a feature update. Here is what it is, and how to think about it as an operator.
What Actually Shipped
| Product | Vendor | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Orbit | Anthropic | Pulls signals from your connected tools, surfaces what changed overnight, and proposes next actions. Launched May 6, 2026. |
| ChatGPT Pulse | OpenAI | Personalized morning briefing inside ChatGPT, tied to your memory and connected accounts. |
| Proactive Assistance | Gemini surfaces what matters across Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and Android. Expected Google I/O reveal May 15, 2026. |
Three vendors, three product names, one paradigm: assistant that arrives with a draft, not a blank page.
The Shift, In One Sentence
The interaction model is moving from "open the app and type" to "open the app and read what already happened on your behalf."
The assistant arrives with a draft, not a blank page.
Why It Matters for Small Business
If you run a business under 20 people, you do not have a chief of staff. You probably wake up to forty unread emails, six Slack threads, and a calendar that already booked itself. The cognitive cost of "what should I do first today" is not free; for most operators it is the most expensive thirty minutes of the morning.
A proactive assistant absorbs that thirty minutes. It will not always get the priorities right, but it gets you to a draft you can edit, which is a different problem than the one you started with.
The Trade-Offs Worth Naming
- Privacy surface area. To brief you well, the assistant needs access to Gmail, calendar, Slack, GitHub, and whatever else you live in. That is a wider permission grant than most small businesses have ever given a single vendor.
- Signal vs. noise. The first 60 days of any proactive feature are noisy. Be willing to tune what gets surfaced, or you will mute the whole thing in week three.
- Vendor lock-in via memory. The more the assistant learns about your business, the higher the switching cost. Pick the one whose data terms you would still be comfortable with two years in.
Where To Start
Pick one product, connect two tools (start with Gmail and calendar), and run it for two weeks. Track one number: minutes saved before noon. If it is positive after two weeks, expand. If it is not, the integration is wrong, not the idea.
The Bottom Line
Proactive AI is not a new feature on an old product. It is a different product. The vendors who win will not be the ones with the smartest models. They will be the ones whose briefings you actually open every morning.
