MCP Is the USB-C of AI. Here's Why Your Stack Just Got Plug-and-Play.

MCP hit 97 million monthly downloads and most enterprise AI teams run it in production. What plug-and-play AI means for tools you already pay for.

If you have heard the term "MCP" in passing and tuned it out, this post is the catch-up. SDK downloads went from roughly 2 million per month at launch to 97 million per month by March 2026, and 78% of enterprise AI teams already have at least one MCP-backed agent in production. This is the rare AI standard that is actually winning.

What MCP Is, In Plain English

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. Anthropic introduced it in late 2024 and open-sourced it on day one. The idea is one sentence long: every tool your AI agent might want to use exposes itself the same way, so the agent can pick it up without a custom integration.

Think of USB-C. Before it, every device had its own cable. After it, one port worked for laptops, phones, monitors, and headphones. MCP is doing the same thing for AI agents and the tools they need to do real work.

Before vs. after MCP
Agent → Custom Stripe code + Custom Notion code + Custom CRM code
Agent → MCP → Stripe + Notion + CRM (plug-and-play)

The old way: a custom integration per tool, written by you. The new way: every tool already speaks MCP.

Why It Is Suddenly Everywhere

MCP SDK downloads per month
Nov 2024 (launch) 2M
Mar 2026 97M

A roughly 48x increase in 16 months across the Python and TypeScript SDKs combined.

Three things forced the curve upward:

  • OpenAI and Google adopted it. Once the three frontier vendors were all behind one protocol, every SaaS company had to.
  • Streamable HTTP transport. MCP servers can now run as remote services, not just local processes. That unlocked production deployments at companies that would not run a local sidecar.
  • It is open and simple. A small team can ship an MCP server in a long afternoon. The bar for "be a first-class tool in the agent ecosystem" got very low.

What This Changes for a Small Business

If you are running a five-person company, you probably have ten to twenty SaaS tools. The old way of connecting an AI agent to all of them was to either glue everything together yourself, or buy a no-code workflow product (Zapier, Make, n8n) to do the gluing. That work is not going away, but its shape is changing.

  • Stripe, Notion, Linear, Cloudflare, Shopify, and a long tail of others now ship official MCP servers. Your agent can read your Stripe revenue, write a Notion doc, or update a Linear ticket without you writing the integration.
  • The middleware tax is going down. The reason you used Zapier was that the integration was the hard part. When the integration is one line of config, the reason to pay for an extra layer weakens.
  • Lock-in shifts away from the model. Because every model now speaks MCP, you can swap Claude for GPT-5.5 for Gemini without rewriting your tool layer. The model becomes the swappable piece, not the foundation.

When MCP Is Overkill

If you have one workflow, one tool, and one prompt, MCP is more machinery than you need. Webhooks, a direct API call, or a single Zap is still simpler. MCP starts paying back when you have multiple tools, multiple agents, or any plan to swap models without rewriting wiring.

The Bottom Line

MCP is the rare AI-era standard that all three frontier vendors agreed on, that ships in your existing SaaS tools, and that you can start using without rebuilding anything. You do not need to learn the protocol to benefit. You just need to ask the tools you already pay for whether they have an MCP server yet. Most of them already do.
