Claude Design Launched. Here's How It Stacks Up Against Figma, Adobe, and Google Stitch.

Anthropic launched Claude Design and Figma stock fell 7% the same day. What the product does, who it threatens, and why small businesses should care.

On April 17, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude Design. The same day, Figma's stock fell roughly 7%. That reaction tells you most of what you need to know about the new entrant: the market thinks it is real.

If you run a small business, you probably do not have a designer on staff. You have probably wrestled with Figma anyway, or tried to make Canva templates do something they were not designed for, or paid a freelancer for a one-pager that took three weeks to nail down. Claude Design changes the math.

What It Actually Is

Claude Design is an AI-native design tool built on Claude Opus 4.7, Anthropic's most capable vision model (released the same day as the product). You give it a prompt, an image, a Word doc, a PowerPoint, an Excel sheet, or even a codebase, and it produces:

  • Interactive prototypes
  • Slide decks
  • Wireframes
  • One-pagers
  • Marketing collateral

Output exports as PDF, PowerPoint, or standalone HTML. You can also push designs into Canva for further editing or hand them off to Claude Code to turn a prototype into a working product. It is rolling out to Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers.

How It Competes

vs. Figma. Figma is a professional design tool built for design teams. Claude Design is a generative tool built for everyone else. Anthropic has been explicit: the goal is not to replace Figma. The goal is to make it unnecessary to open Figma at all for the majority of small-business design tasks. For pitch decks, landing-page mockups, or quick brand collateral, that is already true.

vs. Adobe (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, XD). Adobe is the gold standard for finished, production-grade visual work. It is also a steep learning curve, an expensive subscription, and overkill for 90% of what a small business actually ships. Claude Design aims at that 90%: not Photoshop-grade pixel control, but client-ready output in minutes instead of days.

vs. Google Stitch. Stitch (updated March 18, 2026, powered by Gemini) is the most direct philosophical competitor: an AI-native canvas where you talk to the tool and it generates UI. Stitch is narrower: it focuses on web and mobile interface generation, has voice control as a real differentiator, and is free up to 350 generations a month. Claude Design is broader. Stitch is for designing apps. Claude Design is for designing apps, decks, marketing, and one-pagers in the same workspace.

vs. Figma Make. Figma's own AI tool exists, and is improving fast. The honest read: Figma Make is most useful if you already live inside Figma. Claude Design is most useful if you do not, and never want to.

Why It Is Powerful for Small Business

Three things make this product matter for an operator without a design team.

1. Conversational, not skill-gated. You describe what you want. The tool produces it. You do not need to know what an artboard, an auto-layout frame, or a constraint is. The barrier between "I have an idea" and "I have a deck I can show a client" collapses to the time it takes to type.

2. Real outputs, not just mockups. A common failure mode of AI design tools is producing things that look great in the canvas and crumble the moment you try to use them in the real world. Claude Design exports to actual file formats your stakeholders can open: PDF, PPTX, HTML. That last one is the differentiator. Standalone HTML means a working static site, not a screenshot of one.

3. Tight handoff to engineering. The Claude Code handoff matters more than it sounds. Most design tools end at "here is the picture." Claude Design ends at "here is the picture, and here is the working code if you want it." For a solopreneur or a one-engineer team, that is the difference between a prototype and a shipped product.

Honest Limitations

Claude Design is new, generation-first, and not built for design system management, multi-designer collaboration on the same file, or pixel-precise illustration. Professional design teams will keep using Figma and Adobe for the same reason restaurants keep using professional knives. The tool is a generative starting point, not a production endpoint, and it shows in the rough edges of v1.

The Bottom Line

If you are a small business that has been paying a freelance designer to mock up things you could describe in three sentences, or paying for a Figma seat you barely use, Claude Design is worth a serious look. It is not perfect. It is also a product that, on day one, made the most-watched design company in the world drop 7% in a single trading session. That kind of move does not happen for nothing.
